One of my favorite things is volunteering in my childrens’ classrooms.  I love the chance to get to know their teachers, their classmates, and above all to see how they fit into their class.  This year I had the opportunity to help with reading and art in my son’s second grade classroom, which gave me a unique opportunity to help the students create a one-of-a-kind keepsake for their teacher at the end of the school year.  In this little book each child’s signature was imposed on their photo, and then on the facing page a personal message to their teacher was included along with an “apple” created from their own thumbprint.  The students couldn’t wait to see the finished project – but kept the surprise beautifully for several weeks until it was time to present it to their teacher.  The little 4×4″ book won’t take up much room on her shelf, but in this case the best things really do come in small packages.
