Bramble & Vine

Rambling

19 Aug

Although I aboslutely love creating digital artwork and selling it here at Bits of Ivory – I still like to get my hands (and table) dirty every now and again. I’m thrilled to be offering a few of my handcrafted items for sale now, but wanted to be sure to keep things uncomplicated for customers of Bits of Ivory who buy digital artwork in downloads. To avoid any confusion on whether an item is a digital image or kit, or a real-life, shipped-to-your-home item, I’m selling my handcrafted items at Etsy under the name of Bramble & Vine (BrambleAndVine.etsy.com)

The children are headed back to school this week and I’m hoping to get a few more sets off of my drawing board and into the store here! I’ve also got a few fun little project ideas to post here on the blog so be sure to watch for them.

I'm a designer who loves this beautiful world, my cozy home, and getting my fingers delightfully inky @happythoughtindeed.

Instagram post 2197674317045945332_274818692 One of my challenges this year has been to share things I’m learning before I’ve mastered them. Watercolors have been one of the things I’ve explored and while there’s still so much room for improvement, I’ve found so much joy in exploring and trying new things without the pressure of being flawless. This challenge project was way outside of my comfort zone, but the Christmas story is close to my heart, and I loved taking a few hours to reflect on the Christmas story and create this little painting.

Instagram post 2196093359138039638_274818692 There were some lovely flowers left over from our arranging creative night, so I filled my favorite little vases. It has become my favorite Christmas decoration in our living room. I’ve always had the silly notion that fresh flowers are an extravagance, fit for special occasions, but a bit too indulgent for every day. Since my good friend gave me these pretty vases I’ve fallen in love with having this touch of the outdoors in my home. So often a gift from someone else has taught me something about myself that I didn’t know before. I love that I’m still discovering my favorite things, even after all these years! What’s something you’ve discovered about yourself lately? Maybe you’ll inspire the rest of us with our new favorite thing!

Instagram post 2193337930888866744_274818692 This was the fourth arrangement I made. I’m a little in love with the warm reds, and it while there’s still room for improvement, I could already see a big difference in balance and shape. Approaching new things as a learner and explorer can be so liberating - what ifs and let’s trys are more powerful than shoulds and can’ts. with The new year approaching what’s one new skill you’d like to experiment with in 2020?

Instagram post 2192301254540402447_274818692 Recently women in our neighborhood have started gathering for a monthly creative night. We take turns showing each other something we’ve learned to do, and there are always little snack-sized projects (like gift tags) for those who want to keep their hands busy while we chat. Some people even bring their own projects from home to work on! Last night my neighbor taught us to arrange a holiday centerpiece (and demonstrated several other types of arrangements). I learned something about myself. I’m not a natural at arranging flowers. 😁 Do you know what that means? It means that I’m going to have to put a bit more effort into learning this art. It means I have even more appreciation for the time and effort she’s put into developing her skill. And it means I need to convince her to come back and teach us again. Because I haven’t laughed that much at myself in a long time, and that’s another skill I’d like to develop.

Instagram post 2190443734611920952_274818692 When I think of Christlike service I immediately think of the man who regularly took my children on snow pushing adventures on a tractor to clear the driveways and walks of neighborhood widows (or rake their leaves, or change their lightbulbs). I think of the man who makes the elderly feel loved and needed, and the young feel cherished and respected. I think of the man who serves quietly and avoids fanfare at all costs. I’m a better person because my one true love is an example of Christlike service every single day.

Instagram post 2188077987839589033_274818692 I prefer online Black Friday shopping since crowds aren’t really my thing. Do you brave the early morning lines to get the best deals in person? As you can see, Fred just likes to stay home and look dramatic.

Instagram post 2187508289066331669_274818692 Today I’m feeling especially thankful. Thankful for the beautiful place I live, a warm and cozy home, and a beautiful family that gathered today in person and through the blessing of technology. .

Instagram post 2185959564074326063_274818692 I love the cycle of the seasons. I love that Autumn isn’t paralyzed at the thought of the quiet sleep of winter. It looks beyond the dark and chill, dropping its seeds to be covered by a soft blanket of snow. Sometimes we think winter is like a death, but Autumn reminds us that it’s really a cocoon that prepares the earth for spring.
Instagram post 2185354446140497066_274818692 Winter came knocking today. Autumn let him in. It feels like a terrible, beautiful betrayal.
Instagram post 2183758179173955005_274818692 Yesterday Fred and I walked a little longer than usual, up a taller-than-usual hill, for a pretty view we usually don’t see. It was totally worth it.
Instagram post 2183136428475890335_274818692 It’s just an old barn. The flowers are faded weeds. Beauty isn’t always where you expect to find it, and seeing it in your everyday surroundings is a skill. .
So here’s my challenge to you: look for one beautifully ordinary thing every single day. If you’ll do this you’ll find before long that your day is filled with them.
.
And if you decide to post a picture would you mind tagging me in it so that I can see too?
