Making Memorial Day a Family Affair

Life & Leisure· Rambling

17 May

Since the Decoration Days of the 1860s, Memorial Day in the United States has evolved from a day to honor those who fell in the Civil War, to a celebration of summer.  Some purists want to strip away the traditions that have crept in to overshadow the original purpose, but I think we can do better than that.  I think that most Memorial Day celebrations are simply off-balance, and that with a little effort the entire day can become more meaningful.  And I believe that children are the key to a Memorial Day that matters.

Honoring Veterans

This is where it all began.  While the day originated to honor those who had fallen in the Civil War, after World War I it became a day to honor those who had fallen in any war.  It was a day to unite, not divide.  A day to remember.  A day of gratitude.  For me, it’s a day to honor all veterans, because I don’t believe that those who lose their lives in war are the only ones who GIVE their lives in war.

In local cemeteries the American Legion decorates the graves of veterans with flags.  As children we used to try to take a few extra hand-picked flowers to place on those graves that seemed neglected.  With our own children we try to spend a bit of extra time at the graves of our family’s veterans as well, and talk about their service.  My grandfathers both served in the Navy during WWII, and my husband’s grandfathers also served, one as a sharp shooter in the Army.  Those family ties have been important to our children as they study history in school, and have helped them better understand that very real personal sacrifices were made.

We also like to take this opportunity to create ties to generations that went before.  While their sacrifices were different, it’s important to us that our children hear their stories and learn to love them.  While we place flowers at family graves we talk about the people whose names we read on the stones.  We talk about what they did, and what the world was like when they lived here.  Even small children enjoy hearing stories about the adventures of living in the past.  For older children, one of our favorite activities was finding lost family graves, and adding the GPS coordinates to a list so that others could find them more easily.  It was like a treasure hunt.

Equally important is creating new memories that our children will want to pass along to their next generations.  The picnics and barbecues, traveling and playing together can be a perfect way to celebrate the world that was built by those that went before.

Balanced together, Memorial Day can truly be a day that leaves a richer legacy for our children and grandchildren.

I love to visit the graves of my relatives in Wellsville, Mendon, Hyrum, and Logan–especially with my 91 year old Grandfather. He doesn’t have much short term memory, but his long term memories are vivid and present. I don’t tire of his stories, even for the nth time.

The stories are the most precious gift, aren’t they? If you haven’t already, make sure you record them this year. The stories will last forever as long as you keep telling them, but the day will come when you wish you could hear them in his voice again, with his particular turns of phrase. It’ll become a family treasure.

Me too! And thanks for the great picture of Grandma Kygar. I always felt special being named for her – and it’s nice having this precious reminder of how beautiful she was.

I remember Grandma Cowley gathering the peonies from her side yard and some other flowers from around her yard to take to the gravesites. mad bending hangers to make stakes to keep the flowers from tipping over.

Oh, yes – the hangers! I had completely forgotten about those. Maybe we should share that tip next year!

Instagram post 2193337930888866744_274818692 This was the fourth arrangement I made. I’m a little in love with the warm reds, and it while there’s still room for improvement, I could already see a big difference in balance and shape. Approaching new things as a learner and explorer can be so liberating - what ifs and let’s trys are more powerful than shoulds and can’ts. with The new year approaching what’s one new skill you’d like to experiment with in 2020?

Instagram post 2192301254540402447_274818692 Recently women in our neighborhood have started gathering for a monthly creative night. We take turns showing each other something we’ve learned to do, and there are always little snack-sized projects (like gift tags) for those who want to keep their hands busy while we chat. Some people even bring their own projects from home to work on! Last night my neighbor taught us to arrange a holiday centerpiece (and demonstrated several other types of arrangements). I learned something about myself. I’m not a natural at arranging flowers. 😁 Do you know what that means? It means that I’m going to have to put a bit more effort into learning this art. It means I have even more appreciation for the time and effort she’s put into developing her skill. And it means I need to convince her to come back and teach us again. Because I haven’t laughed that much at myself in a long time, and that’s another skill I’d like to develop.

Instagram post 2190443734611920952_274818692 When I think of Christlike service I immediately think of the man who regularly took my children on snow pushing adventures on a tractor to clear the driveways and walks of neighborhood widows (or rake their leaves, or change their lightbulbs). I think of the man who makes the elderly feel loved and needed, and the young feel cherished and respected. I think of the man who serves quietly and avoids fanfare at all costs. I’m a better person because my one true love is an example of Christlike service every single day.

Instagram post 2188077987839589033_274818692 I prefer online Black Friday shopping since crowds aren’t really my thing. Do you brave the early morning lines to get the best deals in person? As you can see, Fred just likes to stay home and look dramatic.

Instagram post 2187508289066331669_274818692 Today I’m feeling especially thankful. Thankful for the beautiful place I live, a warm and cozy home, and a beautiful family that gathered today in person and through the blessing of technology. .

Instagram post 2185959564074326063_274818692 I love the cycle of the seasons. I love that Autumn isn’t paralyzed at the thought of the quiet sleep of winter. It looks beyond the dark and chill, dropping its seeds to be covered by a soft blanket of snow. Sometimes we think winter is like a death, but Autumn reminds us that it’s really a cocoon that prepares the earth for spring.
Instagram post 2185354446140497066_274818692 Winter came knocking today. Autumn let him in. It feels like a terrible, beautiful betrayal.
Instagram post 2183758179173955005_274818692 Yesterday Fred and I walked a little longer than usual, up a taller-than-usual hill, for a pretty view we usually don’t see. It was totally worth it.
Instagram post 2183136428475890335_274818692 It’s just an old barn. The flowers are faded weeds. Beauty isn’t always where you expect to find it, and seeing it in your everyday surroundings is a skill. .
So here’s my challenge to you: look for one beautifully ordinary thing every single day. If you’ll do this you’ll find before long that your day is filled with them.
.
And if you decide to post a picture would you mind tagging me in it so that I can see too?

Instagram post 2181529932214446926_274818692 “Life is a journey” has become cliche, but there is an important truth behind it. We tend to think in destinations instead of paths, and that can be incredibly discouraging. We’re here not to be, but to become. If there were nothing better to reach for and dream of and climb to, there could be no growth. So look forward with hope and anticipation, and celebrate each step forward!
Instagram post 2179576676592608223_274818692 I think one of the reasons I love pine cones (pine blossoms) so much is that they remind me that there are so many different kinds of beauty in the world. The more we embrace our personal gifts, experiences, and perspectives, the greater our ability to fill our unique role in the world.

Instagram post 2178063809594623601_274818692 I wanted something pretty for the door that wasn’t too seasonal, so my one true love found me this lovely wreath. It’s the best. So is he.
